ACL Visits Mr. Porter’s London Office

One of my favorite bloggers, Michael Williams of A Continuous Lean, just so happens to also be one of the most important people in menswear today. And Mr. Williams recently got a chance to tour the incredible Mr. Porter offices in London. After I gasped at how beautiful this office space was, I was struck by how very similar the Mr. Porter office’s are to my former employers Old Navy HQ office here in San Francisco, albeit the Mr. Porter space is much, much more high-end and (and a bit tidier…).

The Mr Porter offices are very appropriately situated atop one of the most massive shopping malls I have ever seen. Thankfully, American culture was not to fault for this carnival of consumerism, it was the Australians who are to blame. I’m thinking the Aussies saw it as some sort of modern day colonial revenge complete with valet parking. Interestingly, it is not everyday you see that in London. This point was illustrated by the fact that the valet required a sign explaining that they “park the car for you”.

It sort of makes sense for a company running an online store to be located so close to so much physical retail. It likely serves as a daily reminder of the need to think uniquely to serve the customer in a different way. I’m told though that the main reason the Net-a-Porter / Mr Porter offices are located at the Westfield is because of the availability of large footprint office space. These office space needs are obvious when you look at the growth and scale of things at the company.

Daily Lust: Jonathan Adler Peace Studded Candle

Jonathan Adler Peace Studded CandleHow freakin’ fabulous is this?! Studs are fantastic and so much fun, and a trend that will only get bigger as we move into Spring. Jonathan Adler’s irreverent and iconic pop style, and sense of whimsy has always captured my heart. You can’t help but be overcome with joy when you shop his stores. David and I are huge fans of his work from adorable little knick-nacks and gorgeous holiday decor, to chic and fun textiles and pottery; we even own an incredible Jonathan Adler sofa in our den. I truly believe that everyone needs a bit of Jonathan in their home. And, this would be a fantastic holiday gift!

The Checkout: Schoolhouse Electric & Supply Co.

I’ve been geeking out on and obsessing over Schoolhouse Electric & Supply Co. for sometime now. They are the perfect combination of vintage, heritage, classic, masculine, modern and chic all rolled into one. Portland’s Schoolhouse Electric & Supply Co. are purveyors of the most inspired lighting (which is BEYOND…), furniture, hardware and accessories. They epitomize my personal style better than anyone else right now. I want to go live in their shop. Seriously, do you think they’d let me move in? I’d move to Portland in a heartbeat. The Checkout: Anthropologie’s Holiday Decor

Modern Destiny: The Checkout - Anthro Holiday Decor

One of my favorite parts of Christmas is collecting new ornaments for the tree. David and I even display some of our favorites all year round throughout the house. A little bit of whimsy here and there! I have a few go-to shops for ornaments, including Jonathan Adler (incredible pieces of beautiful/kitsch pop art), the MoMA Store, Restoration Hardware, and of course Anthropologie (affectionately refered to by us die-hard fans as “Anthro”).

I worked at the Anthro here in San Francisco while I was in college because I wanted to constantly be in a space of creativity and inspiration. It didn’t hurt that it was only a few blocks from campus. The winter holidays were always the best time to work at Anthro — the incredible and unique to each store visual installations alone are worth spending time roaming the store. Anthro never disappoints on providing special, unique, creative, and well-made decorations.

I popped into the store today and fell in love with the current assortment of  holiday decorations, and it was simply to hard to pick just a few favorites.

Check out all of Anthropologie’s holiday decor.

Daily Inspiration: Black and Grey (and Nick Wooster too)

Nick Wooster via Nick Wooster TumblrI spotted this image on Nick’s Tumblr today. And of course he’s killing it in that DB blazer, but I am obsessed with the American flag with a twist flying in the background. Those are fantastic shades of black and grey, and great color blocking inspiration for a winter ensemble or even to stripe the walls of a small foyer.

Daily Lust: Anthropologie Sure Footed Base Lamp

Anthro Sure Footed Base LampYears ago I worked at the Anthropologie here in San Francisco while I went back to school. I wanted to work in a really creative space where I would be inspired everyday, and that was also extremely flexible with my hectic class schedule. Anthro fit that bill perfectly. I believe that Anthro is destination retail at its best and does one of the best jobs in the industry of curating their merchandise assortment.

I popped into the store earlier this week and found a fantastic rope lamp which I immediately fell in love with. But when I got home I saw this incredible shoe form lamp and decided that I must own it. I’ve never had lamp lust before… But as with most things from Anthro, this isn’t just a lamp — it’s a piece of art. Love it. Available at Anthropologie, $498.

Daily Lust: Fritz Hansen Essay Table

FritzH_5

The right piece of furniture can completely change the entire mood of a space and take the entire vibe to the next level. The Fritz Hansen table in this room does just that. Other tables may work here, but its the simple, clean lines and the warm, organic texture of this wood table contrasted against the cool, industrial room that really makes this room lustworthy.
