There seems to be a never ending procession of designers sending steampunk influenced collections down the runway. It’s the Sherlock Holmes effect — designers are obsessed with the swagger of Holmes and Watson since the Guy Ritchie blockbuster reminded us all how much we love the fabulously odd detective and his curiously close relationship with the Dr. And let’s be honest, some of these collections have been a bit more costume than wearable. But Rag & Bone have succeeded where others have not.
While the Fall ’12 collection is strongly rooted in historic British references and tailoring, including the obligatory military garb and colonialism, the Rag & Bone team have managed to make each piece feel relevant to today’s man. Though some pieces verged on Professor Henry Higgins territory (which I loved), it was all styled in a manner which made the overall affect it believable.
P.S. Did everyone get together and agree to show big thick horizontal stripes on fantastic top coats for Fall ’12? I mean, I believe in trends but this is getting to feel a bit planned out now isnt’ it?!
