Karl Lagerfeld, the iconic design and photographer, has shot a spread in VMAN 14 called Legends of Fall. It’s shot in the style of “the sumptuous covers legendary illustrator J.C. Leyendecker designed for The Saturday Evening Post.” The models are dress in classic tailored suits, sportswear and military inspired pieces” drawn from the Fall mens collections.
The New York Times, on it’s The Moment blog, thinks men’s earrings are making a comeback. First they returned (or never left) among us boys around in the ’80s: Marc Jacobs who “almost always has three diamonds in his right ear and another in his left” and Rag & Bone “sent out male models with multiple ear piercings for their spring 2010 show.” The Moment says the designer Joseph Altuzarra wears a “gold cross by Eddie Borgo, [and] he’s too young to have gone through the ’80s or ’90s piercing thing.”
And that’s not all: apparently people still think you’re gay if your left ear is pierced. Altuzarra said: “I remember the guy who pierced it asking me which ear I wanted. He said, ‘Left is right, and right is wrong,’ obviously referring to sexual preferences. I got my right lobe pierced.”
I’m a child of the ’80s and I, for one, think men’s earrings ought to stay in the ’80s. But judging one’s sexual orientation based on which ear is pierced is also best left in the ’80s. So, what do you think?
British e-tailer ASOS has this great Waxed Cotton Parka from Velour. I love how clean and simple it is, and the leather detail is great too. Side note: ASOS has a great “click to view catwalk” feature where you can see a model wearing the parka while walking a catwalk.
We love Jack Spade at Modern Destiny. Jack Spade’s Holiday 2009 lookbook is out. And it’s a sight to behold. They continue to do what they do better than ever — I love the Tartan patterned bags — and they’ve added a whole lot more. They have a suitcase, backpacks and lots of wallets. And there’s more apparel: suits, shirts, PJs, ties, bowties and even scarves.
Logo is producing a gay version of the Real Housewives, reportedly to be called Kept and developed by the same producers as Real Housewifes. Gawker has the lowdown on it, and they’re so excited they said: “This is the best thing to happen to gay people since poppers!” Gawker goes on to say “It will focus on fabulous Manhattan party boys who like boys living the high-life.”
And guess what: Marc Jacobs is going to be one of the “housewives!”NYMag.com reported that Jacobs has wanted to connect with reality TV fans for a while, where he would share “Everything, all aspects of my life. All the drama, the intrigue, the sex, the romance, the work. I’m a shameless human being.”
This will be better than The Rachel Zoe Project. I can’t wait!
Don Fisher has many legacies — The Gap, tremendous support for education — but perhaps his greatest gift to the people of San Francisco is his art collection. Don and Doris Fisher have built an amazing collection of modern art: Calder, Chuck Close, Warhol, David Hockney, Gerhard Richter, and on and on. In this video, Fisher takes the San Francisco Chronicle’s art critic through his collection. The collection will be housed at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, not in the Presidio as stated in the video.
Those enterprising guys at Highsnobiety discovered these Japanese saddle-shoe inspired sneakers at a Japanese site called Zozotown. They’re from Journal Standard’sVulture line. You can also get them in brown and tan or tan and khaki (if you speak Japanese). I like that they’re a fun, slightly-more-dressy take on the sneaker. Check out the other colors of the Vulture Saddle Sneaker here.
I’ll be blunt. I haven’t been a fan of Urban Outfitters over the last few years. I think partly due to the fact that every Tom, Dick, and Harry “hipster” (still loathe that word…) in San Francisco seems to be decked out in, or appears to be decked out in Urban wear, and partly because of the awful customer service received in the store by said “hipsters” and their holier-than-thou attitude on repeated occasions. But I’ve been perusing the website lately and have been quite impressed. Here are a few of my favorites. I guess I’ll be making a trip to the store this week to see what else they have in stock. Also, in full disclosure, I worked for Anthropologie (Urban’s sister brand) for a little over two years while in school and I loved it. Click on the photo to go to its respective page on the Urban site.
