Etro Spring 2010

Etro’s Spring 2010 show is beautiful (colorful as always), fun, and flirty.  Yes, I used the term “flirty” to describe menswear.  More on the show at men.style.com. I’m particularly loving the use of various tones of blue, the outerwear, and fun patterned pants.

J.Crew: What a Man Should Know

jcrew_book

Drew and I were at J.Crew yesterday, and I noticed that they’ve gone and written a book.  It’s called What a Man Should Know. I love that they casually had it placed amidst the product. I love the simple, clean design and letterpress cover (but then letterpress gets me going any day.) And I love that they’ve summarzied what a man should know into quotes from men who have lived life well.

J.Crew described the book this way:

Our debut men’s guide by Max Blagg, featuring 50 essential principles (or minor refinements) for the way men live. Illustrated by Hugo Guinness, this helpful handbook is meant to infuse a little joie de vivre into the life of every man and take cocktail conversations to a whole new level.

How To Wear A White Suit

Thanks to The Sartorialist and this stylish man for showing us all how to pull of a white suit.

D&G Spring 2010

I’ve traditionally not been the biggest fan of D&G, but the Spring 2010 collection (Italy meets the wild-wild west) is definitely something I can get on board with.  D&G shows a fantastic High / Low collection with luxe fabrics, chambray, and beautifully distressed denim.  Oh…and the swimwear is pretty good too…

Bedroom Pinups for Boys

New, from photographer Brett Lloyd, who’s shot for Vogue Homme Japan, GQ Style and more, comes the “Quieter Poster Boys.” Says Lloyd (as quoted by The New York Times The Moment):

“Quieter Poster Boys” is a collection of 16 foldouts “designed to go on bedroom walls,” documenting the lads he met couch-surfing across Europe last summer.

That’s right, bedroom pinups of (and for?) boys.  For the record, Mr. Lloyd is known for his photos of boys in skinny jeans. (An overdone trend if there ever was one.)  More about them on Lloyd’s site.

Paul Smith On Sale All The Time

paulsmith_ad

That’s right! There’s a magical place where Paul Smith stuff is always on sale. Or, as The New York Times says, “Where Happiness Is on Clearance.” This in their write-up of Paul Smith’s new Sale Shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Can you imagine?! They sum it up way:

PAUL SMITH SALE SHOP

280 Grand Street (near Roebling Street); Williamsburg, Brooklyn; (718) 218-0020.

THE BRIT This new “sale shop” from the upbeat British designer is crowded with colorful tailored clothing (along with some gaudy leftovers) slashed to semireasonable prices.

THE BURGIANS The staff members are cute, young, moody, enervated. Who can blame them? This is Williamsburg 2009, during the Great Recession.

Bag of the Day: High Line Tote

0610highline.revI’ve been trying to think of a way to work in a post about the High Line.  I’m absolutely enthraled with the project: convert a disused elevated rail line in NYC into an urban park and trail. I’ve been following it for years, and it’s finally open.  Read the backstory on Wikipedia, and visit their site. But how to write about it in the context of this site? NYT’s The Moment to the rescue! They found this amazing bag, part of a line commenrating the project. I love it. Alas, it’s not yet available, but you can check back at the High Line site.

Pitti Uomo: Tailored Prep

0619pittiI’m loving this. The Moment over at NYTimes.com has a great breakdown of Pitto Uomo 2010, and how the Italian suit designers are handling the recession.  (Oh, and what is Pitto Uomo? See here.) Seems guys just aren’t buying suits like they used to.  The response, says The Moment: “Jackets and suits have been deconstructed, washed and sometimes even distressed to create a more casual air, a more multiple-usage garment to accommodate the new career class that, while not necessarily suit-requiring, still needs or wants an element of structure in its wardrobe, one with ease and more flexibility than the traditional business uniform.” It’s very Banana Republic meets J.Crew meets Italian prep.

Kate Spade: Behind the Curtain

katespade_thingswelove_smI just found Kate Spade’s wonderful “Behind the Curtain” site (the company, not person).  It’s wonderfully executed, and wonderfully entertaining.  It has backstory on the marketing; their take on what’s cool in what they’re doing, event listings and a fab “Things We Love” section. Check it out!
