Tommy Hilfiger Hearts LA

pix001

Tommy Hilfiger seems is having a love affair with Los Angeles. Now, I’ve got a conflicted relationship with LA.  I grew up there and my family’s there (and with all the craziness there, we’ve been spending a bunch of time there), and it’s got some hot shops and hot culture.  And nice weather. But it’s dirty, everything is an hour’s drive in endless traffic, and every five blocks a strip mall ruins the view.

But Tommy, Mr. Hamptons Hip, is now West Coast Cool. But with some Hamptons mixed in.  The palette and pattern is more east coast chic, yet it works. Even for LA.

And take it from a (former) local: he has a right-on guide to the essential LA. A must if you’re visiting.

Rachel Zoe’s Fav Men’s Accessories

rachel-zoe-project-blogjpg

Rachel Zoe is on Twitter (as @rzrachelzoe), and she’s got her take on the must have accessories for men. Her take (slightly edited):

what are three must have accessories for men?

a chunky watch, preferably with a chronograph face, and a necklace or bracelet that is a tarnished silver, leather, wood beads,

or “dog tag” necklace…very sexy…

as well as a great messenger bag, preferably distressed and not too polished or crisp..think Johnny Depp!

Also, on a related note: Drew’s got a crush on Brad Goreski, one of Rachel’s assistants on The Rachel Zoe Project.

William Rast: Justin Timberlake Always Dreamed of Denim

William Rast’s Fall 2009 collection is out, and it’s rich in denim. Men.style.com has this quote which sort of encapsulates it:

“Justin Timberlake always dreamed of the perfect denim, but he says he needed Johan and Marcella Lindeberg to make the dream come true. Together, we’re an emerging rock band”

The William Rast site also has some fun trailers with JT promoting the line.

Shots from the show, after the jump…

Unis: Store and Clothes Done Right

30critic2largejpg1

Add this to the list of places to check out in New York: The New York Times has a great write-up on Unis in Manhatthan’s NoLIta. First thing — they’ve got what looks like a killer store experience.  Second, some great product, particularly the shirts, jeans and shorts (looks below).

Finally, they’ve got a smart and not-too-serious blog. It chronicles the store, what goes on behind the scenes and their look. Check it out. And visit the store if you’re in NYC.

GQ’s Spring Shades

0005hjpg10007hjpg1

GQ has a round-up of their spring sunglass choices.  There’s a flight toward plastic frames with some metal highlights.  My picks from Selma Optiques (top left), Balenciaga (top right) and Club Monaco (bottom left).  I can’t decide if I like the Tom Ford specs (bottom right), or not. They’re super-similar to the Club Monaco glasses, but four times the price.  Jump over to GQ for bigger pictures and links to retailers.

RL Polo: “Ivy League Today”

mens_club6-75hjpgmens_club6-75ejpg

Except today is 1975. Found this on The Selvedge Yard, who found it on Heavy Tweed Jacket. As they both point out, it’s a great window into the early Ralph Lauren.  And I think a great historical reference given where he’s taken his empire today.  I’m going to run a recap of Rugby’s latest shortly. It’s interesting to see where it comes from.

Interview Does Andy Spade, Who Did J.Crew’s Liquor Store

spade_1spade_2

Interview Magazine has an interview with Andy Spade, of Jack Spade fame. Post Jack & Kate Spade (they sole to Claireborne), he’s running a design shop called Partners & Spade, and has a gallery/store co-located with his studio. His design shop has done a lot of the creative work for J.Crew’s Liquor Store. And Spade’s store is down as a must-visit for the next trip to NYC.  Some highlights:

On J.Crew’s Liquor Store:

O’BRIEN: Whose idea was the Liquor Store?

SPADE: It was our idea. Mickey Drexler met with us and was asking about what to do with the men’s market, how to make men’s more relevant, and the thought was: Do you go and buy a billboard or do a lot of advertising, or just do a stand-alone men’s shop? And I knew the Liquor Store. I frequented the Liquor Store many years ago when I lived in Tribeca.

On his foray into blogging, the Detail Preservation Society (alas, currently down, it seems):

O’BRIEN: What is the Detail Preservation Society?

SPADE: So we founded a society titled the Detail Preservation Society, and we have a blog that you look to if you want to find who the best bicycle maker is, or . . .

SPADE: Or whatever you’re looking for. Everybody loved it, because we would call friends who do really great things—like Vogel, the cobbler on Howard Street. We’re just really into it. So Mickey was a founder, I was a founder, and a few others.

The interview is a must-read, and the associated slideshow a must-view.

Thomas Burberry Spring

Thomas Burberry’s Spring/Summer ’09 collection is out — along with a rocking site featuring all the advertising images.  It was Burberry’s younger, casual line — fun and playful and comfortable.  I say was, because according to SwipeLife, Burberry shut the line down earlier this year.  That means the Spring collection is the last.
