Perhaps you haven’t heard about the little AMC show that could, Mad Men. But I find that hard to believe as the show has been publicized everywhere as of late. Almost every fashion, style, and entertainment blog I have read over the last week has made some reference to the show. And the boys of Mad Men made it on Charlie Rose. It even came up in a staff meeting at work last week. And now you can even become a “fan” of the show on Facebook. So I spent most of last weekend watching the entire first season of Mad Men, and I can now see what all the fuss was about. Set in 1960′s NYC, Mad Men focuses on the lives of a group of men and women who work in a small advertising firm on Madsion Avenue.
While the show is well acted, and who can deny the appeal of Jon Hamm, what really caught my attention was the production value, attention to detail, and wardrobe. This show is Sex and the City for men, and a feast of eye candy for those who love mid-century modern design. The show has an amazing nostalgic factor, even for those of us who didn’t live through the 60′s. A seemingly simpler time, it shows us how far we’ve come (and haven’t come), and long for a less complicated way of life. But more importantly (at least to me), it reminds us of the amazing fashion, style and design of the early 60′s.
