I seem to be on a little Japanese men’s fashion mag kick. Today I have for you a spread in October’s HuGE called “Absolute Man.” It features model Ash Stymest shot by photographer Satoshi Sakurai. Ash is wearing the latest from Balmain Homme.
You can see more here (with some English text) or here (if you happen to speak Japanese).

It’s a Mad Men day around here. And to finish it off, here’s John Hamm’s photo spread in October’s Italian Vanity Fair.
Hats off to Boy Culture for the find.

Brooks Brothers is bringing back classic ’60s men’s style with their Mad Men suit. It may not make you Don Draper (or John Hamm), but you’ll look dapper trying.
Brooks Brothers say the suit is “directly inspired by the razor sharp 1960s tailoring favored by the characters of Don Draper (played by Jon Hamm) and Roger Sterling (played by John Slattery), the “Mad Men Edition” suit has been reinterpreted for today by award-winning costume designer Janie Bryant: slimmer than our Fitzgerald fit and featuring period details. The hand-finished, American-made suit evokes the clean style and sophistication of the early 1960s. Offered in a “static” grey sharkskin fabric, the 2-button jacket features narrow lapels, hacking pockets and side vents.”

Brooks Brothers has put together a lookbook with the suit, their inspiration, and details of the design process. View on Fashion also has a gallery of the suit and look. And as a bonus, check out Blackbook’s Mad Men fashion write up for the character’s style backstories.

The Rachel Zoe Project meets Survivor? Okay, not quite. MTV’s Styl’D, which premiered last night, follows “the lives of five junior assistants as they toil for three celebrity stylists. Each episode will include the styling of famous Hollywood celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Nicole Richie, Pete Wentz and Ashley Tisdale.” Justjared.com has the full scoop (and thanks to them for the photo). And, by the way, there are some hotties among the boy stylists.

This just in from the rumor mill. Drew and I popped into the Kate Spade store on Stockton in San Francisco this weekend to see what Jack Spade merchandise was in stock. I was horrified to discover that they’re no longer going to carry Jack Spade. Eeek. One of the sales associates explained that the location is closing for renovation, and when it opens it will be Jack Space-free. Not to worry, though, she said plans are in the works to open a standalone Jack Spade store in San Francisco sometime in the next year. I can’t wait!

American Apparel celebrated pride with their Legalize Gay t-shirt. Now they’ve added two new “gay” t-shirts. Part of their Library Tee series, “Pair at Gay Parade” depicts “a pair [marching] down Santa Monica Blvd. in the West Hollywood Gay Pride Parade, 1984.” And lest their be any confusion that they stand firmly against homophobia, the “Anti-Homophobia Rally” shirt shows “protestors outside an Anaheim hotel in 1989, holding signs to silently demonstrate their opposition to homophobia.”
Pick up the shirts at American Apparel for $30. And if you want a “Legalize Gay” shirt, they’re here and here (in HRC colors).

I spent the evening tonight standing in line on the streets of San Francisco waiting to get a signed copy of The Sartorialist’s (aka Scott Schuman) new book. Over the two and a half hours I spent in line waiting to get into the Paul Smith store where Scott was signing books, hundreds of Sartorialist enthusiast paraded by in some quite spectacular stylings. There was some great “visual greed” (read the book), and some rather (ah hem) interesting outfits. I was a bit amused and fascinated that it appeared that 80% of those in line had spent the day on Scott’s blog, The Sartorialist, getting inspiration (and dare I say copying?) those stylish folks that Scott photographs around the world in preparation for a moment with the man behind the camera. I came straight from work and was exhausted, so not at all at my fashion best, but nonetheless “me.” Scott seemed to be quite charming, even after signing for almost two hours. I decided against sitting with him to get a photo as I was exhausted and not up for a picture, but now I wish I had gotten the photo anyway. Another time. On my way out of the store I noticed the line still extended out the door, down the block, and around the corner. The Sartorialist is definitely making his impact on fashion and pop culture. Good for him. And Scott, thanks for the daily inspiration.
